One to Read:
ChristinaJ
by Lindsey Giardino
When it comes to ChristinaJ, the question is simple. What can’t she do? Her multi-layered identity lends to her storytelling abilities, which recently culminated in her debut novel—a story that started as an improvised tale she told her kids at bedtime.
“I feel that my experiences, my family, my career, my kids, everything that has occurred in my life has led me to creating Royal Planet,” she says. “I feel like different aspects of myself shine through some of the characters. I hear my experiences speak through them.”
Jess McGeachin
Takes Readers to the Lost Library
by Raven Howell
What kid doesn’t want to know about secret spaces and mysterious, hidden places? Children’s author/illustrator Jess McGeachin has special childhood memories of tucking away into the library for reading and exploring the enigmatic, historic Melbourne Museum. His new picture book, The Lost Library, is based on those experiences.
Barbara DiLorenzo
Pens a Picture Book to Help Kids Cope with School Lockdowns
by Michele Appelgate
Haunted by a school lockdown experience, Barbara DiLorenzo shows young readers that although the world can be scary, it is still a beautiful place. “One Thursday Afternoon was a book I didn’t set out to write,” DiLorenzo said. “My mind kept returning to the idea that we have books to help kids discuss common challenges like a new sibling, the first day of school, or even handling a bully. But nothing was available to validate a young person’s feelings regarding lockdown drills in school.”
Jeffrey Lindberg
Takes Readers Back in Time in New Picture Book
by Michele Appelgate
After enjoying a successful career as an illustrator, Jeffrey Lindberg decided to write his first picture book for children, and the setting has a special place in his heart.
“This story has been in development for a long time. While I was living in Brooklyn, we would often visit Coney Island, go to Nathans, and, of course, ride on the Cyclone. But there was something about Coney Island that occupied a different place in my mind,” Lindberg said.
Dr. Dawn Menge
Invites Young Readers on a Magic Train Ride
by Michele Appelgate
In addition to writing award-winning books for children, Dr. Dawn Menge has been teaching students with severe cognitive delays for 25 years and worked as an assistant for three years before that. She is currently teaching in a K-12 classroom, is an induction and teacher support coach for new teachers, and also teaches at the local university at night.
“I can balance everything by being very organized, learning to multitask, and mostly just enjoying everything I am involved in,” she said. “I have written books in airports, hotel rooms, and on camping trips.”
